Meet the Ambassadors – Katy Montgomerie

Hello! My name is Katy Montgomerie and I’m hopelessly addicted to competitive Pokémon cards. I got into the Pokémon TCG when it first came out back in 1999, and my first ever deck was the Machamp starter deck! I remember being one of the few kids at school who actually knew how to play, but I can’t have been that good because I was convinced that Jungle Vileplume had to be the BDIF as it could do 120 damage!!! (*cough* if you flipped three heads *cough*). I then took a brief 22 year hiatus and got back into it around the time that Silver Tempest came out, via PTCGL.
It took me about a year to build up the courage to start going to in-person events. I had tried to go to the MTG society at University but after one meetup I was completely put off IRL card games due to… well you know. So fortunately I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the UK’s South West has an amazing PTCG scene with great organisers, friendly people and even other women!
For the first few months I was content with losing with my Meowscarada ex deck every week, but then I discovered Miraidon ex and managed to win a local event. I got a taste of victory and haven’t looked back! Now I spend way too much of my free time scouring Limitless for the latest deck building innovations and listening to various podcasts about the ever-changing metagame.
If you’ve heard of me before it’s probably from one of my metal bands or through my feminist and atheist activism. If you see me at an event you’re welcome to come over and say hi and talk about that stuff, but I’d probably rather hear about how you lost your last game because you Pokégear’d an 8 card deck and missed your last Sada. But if you haven’t heard of me before then unlucky, you have now.
I still have a lot of room for improving and growing as a player, particularly when it comes to the mental side of the game, but I’m also proud of how far I’ve come! I’ve attempted to set achievable goals for me this season, and they are: win a league cup and day 2 a major event! Should be easy right?! See you all at the top tables x
